Also known as: College Ave Co-Signer
College Ave allows co-signers on private student loan applications. A co-signer is typically a parent or other creditworthy adult who applies jointly with the student and takes on equal legal responsibility for the debt.
As with any private student loan, you should complete the FAFSA and maximize federal student loan eligibility before considering College Ave or any private lender. Federal loans from the US Department of Education provide income-driven repayment, deferment, forgiveness programs, and other protections that co-signed private loans do not offer.
Adding a co-signer to a College Ave application can help students with limited or no credit history qualify for a loan or access a lower interest rate. The co-signer's credit and income are evaluated alongside the student's, and a strong co-signer profile generally results in better loan terms.
The co-signer is equally liable for the loan. If the student falls behind on payments, the co-signer is responsible for making them, and missed payments affect both parties' credit histories.
College Ave commonly offers a co-signer release option, which allows the co-signer to be removed from the loan after the borrower meets certain conditions. These typically include making a set number of consecutive on-time full payments and passing a credit review at the time of the release application. Release is not guaranteed or automatic.
Fixed and variable rate options are typically available. Fixed rates stay constant for the life of the loan. Variable rates may change based on market indexes.
Both the student borrower and the co-signer should carefully review the annual percentage rate, total repayment cost, term length, co-signer release conditions, and any fees before committing to a College Ave loan. Comparing offers from multiple lenders is always a sensible step.
