Benefits many US households are missing — and how to check

Billions in unclaimed benefits sit uncollected every year in the US. The most common reason is that people do not realise they are eligible.

According to federal estimates, billions of dollars in US federal and state benefits go unclaimed each year across SNAP, Medicaid, EITC and other programs. The most common reason is not fraud — it is that people do not realise they qualify.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

The EITC is one of the most underclaimed credits in the US tax system. Workers without children frequently miss it. Millions of eligible Americans leave this money unclaimed each year. Use the IRS EITC Assistant at IRS.gov/eitc to check.

Child Tax Credit

Families with qualifying children may be eligible for the Child Tax Credit (up to $2,000 per child). Some families with lower incomes qualify for a refundable portion even if they owe no tax. Check current rules at IRS.gov.

Carer's Allowance

If you care for someone for 35 hours or more a week who receives certain disability benefits, you may qualify for Carer's Allowance. Many carers are unaware this applies to them.

Free School Meals

Children from households meeting income thresholds may qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Some eligible families do not apply — check eligibility with your child's school district.

Healthy Start vouchers

If you are pregnant or have a child under four and receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for Healthy Start vouchers to spend on food and vitamins.
